A Serious Man
In this dark comedy set in the 1960's, Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg "The Grey Zone"), a Midwestern professor whose life start to unravel over the course of a few particularly eventful weeks. He's up for tenure, but someone is submitting negative anonymous letters urging the committee to not to grant it. His wife (newcomer Sari Lennick) has decided to leave him for their friend, Sy Ableman (Fred Melamed "Hollywood Ending"). He sees a neighbor sunbathing nude but when he works up the courage to talk to her, nothing happens. His brother (Richard Kind "The Visitor"), who is developing a "probability map of the universe," has moved in with them and is an albatross around his neck. His son (newcomer Aaron Wolff) wants nothing more than that Larry re-align the aerial TV antenna so "F-Troop" comes in clearly.

There's little doubt that A Serious Man  directed by Joel and Ethan Coen ("No Country for Old Men") is their most personal film and it gets a lot of mileage out of Stuhlbarg's absolutely stunning performance which holds your interest and compensates a bit for its distinct lack of plot. But that only holds true for so long. It finally reaches a point when the aimlessness of the Coen's screenplay becomes increasingly difficult to sit through as the film starts to run out of steam somewhere around the midway point. And even the most ardent Coen fans will find themselves scratching their head over the movie's almost comically abrupt conclusion.
