From Hell
The Hughes Brothers have taken a leap from the gritty films they directed in the past "Menace II Society" and "Dead Presidents" to tell the chilling true story about the hunt for the Ripper that they present here in moody tones of ochre and haze. Besides Depp (who keeps getting better with every role he plays) and Graham there's a wonderful cast of British character actors including Ian Holm as the royal physician, Robbie Coltrane as Depp's partner, and Ian Richardson as Depp's boss. The Prague locations where the film was shot look amazing like London in 1888. The title comes from a phrase in one of the Ripper's notes to the London police who are trying to follow the bloody trail of the most famous of Britain's criminals. Though the film has a horific tale to tell, there's a good deal of humor throughout, especially as played by Depp and his sidekick Coltrane.
