Black Hawk Down
Ridley Scott who brought "Gladiator" to the screen last year has turned to the 20th century for his action this time. It's based on the accounts of journalist Mark Bowden who chronicled the 1993 attempt by the U.S.'s elite forces to become involved in Somalia's Civil War in Mogadishu where 18 American soldiers died and more than 70 others were badly injured. It's difficult viewing, but never done with such realism. The prolonged action footage is unforgettable, more realistic than even the exciting attack scenes in "Pearl Harbor," and this is a much better picture, but when it's all over you'll still be exhausted and relieved to be able to get away from the grim realities and the utter futility of our country's involvement.
