Hotel Rwanda
Close to a million people were killed in Rwanda during the course of the bitter and bloody conflict between the Hutu extremists and Tutsi segments of the population. At the Milles Collines Hotel in Rwanda, Paul Rusesabagina, former manager of the hotel, did everything he could to prevent the massacre of his family, friends and as many other refugees and orphans as he could manage to get into the hotel. Rusesabagina had been working as a diplomat before these events and he returned to the Milles Collines shortly before all hell broke lose, and found himself fighting an incredible struggle to keep those he loved and those seeking his help alive. Using his political connections, his extreme intelligence and bribery, Rusesabagina led a heroic effort to save many from death at the hands of the vicious Hutu. This magnificent film was directed by Terry George (In the Name of the Father) who takes us through the terrible events that marked the genocide in Rwanda. He never lets the emotional moments run too long, just letting the reality of the events play out on the screen. Don Cheadle (Oceans 12), without the aid of make-up or any radical change in appearance, completely transforms himself and he is bound to be on every year-end award list. He stands out in this year of fine performances by actors including Jamie Foxx, Liam Neeson, and Paul Giamatti.
