A 15 year old boys dream comes true when he is given a job to write about a new rock band for Rolling Stone magazine. Based on director Crowe's own life story, William (Patrick Fugit) becomes friends with the lead singer of the band (Billy Crudup) and the groupies who follow them, especially Penny Lane (Kate Hudson, daughter of Goldie Hawn). Much to the consternation of his mother (the fabulous Frances McDormand) who hates rock music and drugs, William latches on to the group named "Stillwater" on a cross-country odyssey in pursuit of his 3,000 word story. There's also a wonderful performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman as the legendary Lester Bangs. If you like good rock music, some wonderful performances and you've wondered what it was like to be part of the rock music scene in the 70's, you'll love this film, if not you'll probably enjoy it anyway.
