Winged Migration
If you find bird migration fascinating, this majestic documentary will transport you with a sense of lift and soaring like no film has ever provided taking you alongside these beautiful creatures on their fall and spring expeditions. Perrin, producer of such hugely successful films as Z and Cinema Paradiso, as well as the documentary Microcosmos (about insects) employed over 450 people (including seventeen pilots and fourteen cinematographers) for three years through 40 countries and each of the seven continents to capture the swooping birds as they traveled thousands of miles on their annual migrations. Using a wide variety of aircraft including planes, gliders, helicopters, balloons, employing ingeniously designed cameras you'll be transported from Paris and the Eiffel Tower to Utah and the Monument Valley and to the remote reaches of the Arctic and the Amazon. You'll see the Eurasian Cranes as they make their annual 2,500 mile trek from Spain to Borneo, the Bar Headed Geese who fly from India to the Far East steppes, the Albatross’ as it flies over the ocean for amazing lengths of time, and an army of King Penguins stretching as far as the camera’s eye can see, and that's just the beginning. There's not much narration and just a few subtitles to provide basic information but the pictures will astound you. If you're in the mood for a film of staggering beauty that will open your eyes to one of the wonders of the natural world breathtakingly captured in all its glory, color, and movement, this airborne hour and a half will amaze you.
