Jimmy's Buzz Guide Review:
There are lots of bare midriffs, gyrating bodies and camera angles straight out of MTV, but there's also a decent, if familiar storyline between the sweaty dance routines, and it makes for an energetic, sincere and funny hip-hop fable.

Honey
Jessica Alba (of television's Dark Angel) plays a driven young dancer who's trying to break out of the the hip-hop club scene and into the music-video world. She's an alarmingly appealing and energetic young woman who communicates warmth and humor. You'll be hearing from her again. The cliched script combines elements of "Flashdance," "Fame" and "Footloose," and so many others, but doesn't take itself seriously enough for that detract. There are a few too many familiar characters, like the obstructive parent, the pig of a manager, and friends back home that Jessica's left behind, but there are also exciting tunes and endless video-clips throughout that will keep teenagers, for whom this film was made, entertained. The dancing is really hot and the cast is quite wonderful, particularly Joy Bryant in the role of Jessica's wisecracking-friend and handsome Mekhi Phifer as the token-good guy. And, despite the fact that the big production number that ends the film is hokey and unbelievable, it's also wildly entertaining. Former music video director Bille Woodruff get to show off his expertise and it all makes for a film that teenages will love
