Lust, Caution
in 1938 Shanghai, Wang (newcomer Wei Tang) is a shy teenage who's been left in China by her father, who has escaped to England. As a college freshman she meets fellow students in a drama group run by handsome Kuang (Lee-Hom Wang "Moon Child"), a director who's written a play about the damages of war and occupation on a Chinese family. While discussing politics in a theater balcony, Kuang and his actors turn into resistance fighters, planning the assassination of the traitorous collaborator, Mr. Yee (Tony Leung "In the Mood for Love"). Each student has a part to play: Wang will gain Yee's trust by befriending his wife (Joan Chen "The Last Emperor") and then draw the man into an affair, setting him up to be killed.

Yee is so cautious that it takes years for Wang to actually get him into bed, but once she does all his repressed urges toward her explode in a series of justly celebrated sex scenes. As time passes and political tensions rise, Wang and Yee's relationship becomes increasingly complicated and it becomes less and less clear what their real feelings are; whether he may be suspicious of her motives which causes him to violently attack her sexually or whether she is actually falling for the man who is brutilizing her. It's this dichotomy that will keep you glued to the screen despite the rough sexual activity taking place.

The many thought-provoking ideas at the core of the film directed by Ang Lee ("Brokeback Mountain") simmer underneath the surface for most of its running time, and when he masterfully pulls everything together at the riveting climax, "Lust, Caution" suddenly becomes a suspenseful and emotionally charged espionage thriller that you won't soon forget.
