Halle Berry ("Monster's Ball") plays Rowena, a newspaper reporter who writes under a fake name so that she can go after powerful men who do devious things. From outing a boy scout attacking senator to exposing general corruption, nothing is off limits for her. That is, until one of her childhood friends (Nicki Aycox "Dead Birds") is found dead after an affair with a very rich and powerful advertising executive (Bruce Willis "Die Hard"). Accompnied by her nerdy assistant Miles (Giovanni Ribisi "Saving Private Ryan"), she poses as a temp at the agency and finds herself in a situation that is far more dangerous than it initially appears and she has to find a way out after discovering that she isn't the only one changing identities.
Willis is believable enough as a lying, cheating, power hungry guy, although he does overdo it a bit. The same can be said for Giovanni Ribisi, whose character turns from an internet nerd into sociopathic cliche. But it's the gorgeous Halle Berry as the rogue reporter with a dark side, who is by far the most interesting character.
Despite some sexy moments and a few choice bad guy lines from Bruce Willis, this watchable but ultimately frustrating thriller directed by James Foley ("Glengarry Glen Ross") is an engrossing enough film up to its somewhat twisty ending, but there are far too many red herrings, so that when the story finally unravels, you will have lost interest. Based on the clues provided in the story, there's no way to predict the ending. In fact, it takes about five minutes of exposition to tie up all the loose ends and attempt to convince us that the identity of the killer makes any sense at all.
