Clemente Soto Velez Center

The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center Inc. is a Puerto Rican/Latino cultural institution that has demonstrated a broad-minded cultural vision and a collaborative philosophy. While The Clemente Center’s mission is focused on the cultivation, presentation, and preservation of Puerto Rican and Latino culture, it is equally determined to operate in a multi-cultural and inclusive manner, housing and promoting artists and performance events that fully reflect the cultural diversity of the Lower East Side and the city as a whole.
Named after a famous Puerto Rican poet and founded by a trio of Latino arts supporters, including writer Ed Vega (Suzanne Vega’s stepdad), Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center is one of New York’s largest art incubators. Fifty-three visual artists occupy studios on the building's top three floors, while thirteen performing-arts troupes vie for space in the four theaters and multiple rehearsal areas below. The first- and second-floor galleries host a wide array of exhibits by predominantly Latino artists of both local and international hues, while ensembles like La Tea., L.E.F.T. (Latino Experimental Fantastic Theater), and the leading children’s company SEA (Society for Educated Arts) mount stage productions year-round.
