Alley Pond Environmental Center

Alley Pond Environmental Center

The nature trails traverse ponds, salt marshes, forests and meadows where visitors will see shore birds, migrating flocks, and a variety of small animals. Or, visitors can attend one of APEC's many nature oriented programs for children and adults. Please explore our website to learn more. The Alley Pond Environmental Center is dedicated to establishing awareness, understanding and appreciation of the environment and to preserving nature in an urban setting. Open 7 days a week, except for major holidays. Monday - Friday APEC is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with varying hours on the weekend. Call ahead if coming in on a weekend. Walking trails are open from dawn to dusk, year ‘round.  Alley Pond Park is the home of the Douglaston Estate Windmill, a reminder of our agricultural past. The original windmill was built around 1870 on the Douglaston peninsula. It was used to pump water to the farms in the community. Around the turn of century, farmland was replaced by homes; even the windmill was converted into a two-room dwelling for a time. In 1985, the site of the windmill was sold, and a Committee to Save the Windmill was formed by local residents who succeeded in moving it to a site just west of APEC’s building. Sadly, it was burned to the ground in a senseless act of arson. They constructed a new water-pumping replica in its place, and now APEC has a working windmill raising fresh water from below ground to the surface.
