Jimmy's Buzz Guide Review:
Charlize Theron gives one of the year's finest performances as the notorious Florida murderess, Aileen Wuornos. Despite a mediocre script, Theron's amazing performance makes this a must-see.

Monster
Based on the true story about the now executed prostitute and serial killer, the movie is unflinching in its portrayal of Wuoronos and her grizzly crimes. The glamorous Charlize Theron ("The Italian Job" and "Sweet November"), looks completely different here. She's got splotchy skin, uneven yellowish teeth, straw-like hair, and looks like she's 20 pounds heavier, as the nervous, fidgety, and explosively violent character. A hooker since she was thirteen, she begins her murderous spree after being raped and beaten. She gives up the life of a whore for that of a murderer in order to support her newfound girlfriend, Selby Wall, played by the Christina Ricci ("Anything Else") who is much better than she's ever been. But it's Theron's astounding performance that will make you forget some of the unconvincing actors who play most of her victims. There aren't many great roles for an actress, and Theron makes the most of this one. You'll be seeing her name on every best actress list. Although American films don't get much grimmer than this depressing and shocking portrait of "America's first female serial killer," written and directed by Patty Jenkins, it has one of the year's unforgettable performances. It's one that you shouldn't miss.
