Because of Winn-Dixie
Based on the perennial best seller, "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo, this is the story of a lonely young girl who adopts an orphaned dog that she names Winn-Dixie, for the supermarket where she found him. They have something in common: she doesn’t have a mother and he doesn’t have a home. They both want somebody to love and somebody to love them. And, as a team, they begin to realize that other people just might want the same things. The bond between the girl and her new companion brings together the people in the sleepy town of Naomi, Florida, a place where people have forgotten how to share their sadness and their joy. But Opal (AnnaSophia Robb) and Winn-Dixie (the aptly named pooch) might bring about some changes in all that. Jeff Daniels, Cicely Tyson, Dave Matthews and Eva Marie Saint star as the somewhat eccentric adults who benefit from Opal and Winn-Dixie’s bumpy summer of discovery. This is the fourth film adaptation of a novel that Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club) has directed. He says he enjoys making movies "about something that is missing in our lives, empty places that we're trying to fill." In this case he's made a simple, slow-moving, shaggy-dog story that is charming enough to keep us involved, but without enough dramatic tension to make it much more than ordinary.
