16 Blocks
It's 8 o'clock in the morning and a hungover and out of shape NYPD detective Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) is assigned what seems to be simple task, but he's not happy about it, not at all. Petty criminal Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) is set to testify before a grand jury at 10 o'clock and needs to be taken from his jail cell to the courthouse, 16 blocks away. But Jack's in no mood to deal with a punk who's been in and out of jail for more than half his life. Still it should only take him 15 minutes to drop Eddie off at and get home. He believes that Eddie's a pathetic rat who's been offered a too-sweet deal, but it'll only take him a few minutes and then he can take off and have a drink. When he shoves Eddie into the back of his car and pulls out into the New York city rush hour traffic, he doesn't notice that there's a van following him. When Jack stops off at a liquor store to pick up some sustenance, he leaves Eddie locked inside his police car.

Suddenly Eddie finds a loaded gun pointed at his head as Jack emerges just in time to prevent his execution. Jack kills one of the assassins and narrowly escapes being killed by the second. When he calls for backup, homicide detective Frank Nugent (David Morse) and his team shows up. Eddie suddenly freaks out. One of the detectives on Nugent's team is the man he is supposed to testify against. In that moment, Jack's quickie trip downtown turns into the nightmare of a lifetime. It seems that the criminals that want Eddie dead are all cops. There's also a history between Jack and Nugent, that Jack's been desperately trying to forget. And as Nugent is quick to point out, Eddie's testimony could to bring them all down. Nugent offers to stage a mock hostage situation in which Eddie is killed and Jack walks away. But Jack has been pushed around too much by Nugent and decides not to cooperate. A split second before Nugent's team can execute Eddie, Jack rebels and sets into motion a chain of events that will change their lives forever. Jack and Eddie are forced to fight their way to the courthouse block by gut-wrenching block. Scurrying their way through the basements, apartment buildings, businesses and rooftops of the neighborhood, Eddie and Jack develop mutual respect despite their diametrically opposed philosophies.

Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) has directed this odd-couple action/thriller with a cutting edge making this a compelling, though violent drama.
